All inquiries about the Academy should be directed to Stan Wilkerson at: stan@betheltampa.org.
• Mission and Philosophy
Driven by the ineffable and universal nature inherent to our area of focus, the fine arts community of Bethel Academy for the Arts aims to present an essential comprehensive level of musical education to students of all levels and ages.
By these means, BAA endeavors to enhance the quality of the musical life of our geographical community.
We are a Christian institution that seeks to encourage the use of musical gifts and abilities to glorify God.
We aspire to provide enriching musical experiences that build on the student's God-given musicality by offering programs in various settings which cover many necessary skills for lifelong use.
We seek to educate using pedagogically sound methods and philosophies, allowing for the student's individuality and expression to freely flourish while establishing a strong foundation of musicianship.
We seek to encourage diligence and discipline in goal achievement while striving for high standards in literacy, competence, and performance.
And we work to maintain healthy and open relationships between students, parents, staff, and administrators in order to create a vibrant and trusted environment for all.
• Experienced Instructors
Our faculty members are experienced leaders in their field, who strive to expand themselves musically, intellectually, and pedagogically. These qualified music instructors are committed to providing valuable and stimulating learning experiences for all students.
• Curriculum
Academy students study classical, Christian and popular genres in private lessons specifically tailored to their level, age and learning style. These lessons, combined with group lesson and ensemble study, expose the student to a broad view of music and musicianship.
Private lessons
Private instruction consists of one 30-minute lesson per week (45 or 60 minute lessons for advanced students may be available). During the academic year, each student is scheduled to receive 30 private lessons. (12 per semester)
The Academy stresses individual practice time. Students (and parents of young students) should be prepared to practice on their instrument several times each week for at least 15 minutes. More advanced students will require extra practice time. Our instructors do everything they can to make lessons a great experience, but there is no substitute for a student's preparation. Plan to practice, follow through, and you are set for a rewarding musical journey, the benefits of which will last a lifetime!
Group lessons
Musicianship, skills mastery and the study of the elements and functions of music are covered in group lessons. Enrollment for group lessons is open to all, including those who are not otherwise registered at the Academy but wish to supplement their music education from other sources. Attendance of Academy students is not mandatory but is highly recommended.
Dependent on the course syllabus, students may perform in class for each other and together as an ensemble, with the possibility of performing in a formal recital.
• Performances
Musical growth through performance is invaluable and irreplaceable. The Academy provides numerous enrichment opportunities to hone this skill:
Ensembles
BAA emphasizes ensemble study through the unique feature of teacher collaboration from studio to studio, enabling our students more varied experience in this area. These partnerships also serve to set a norm and precedent, experience with which is a indispensable lifelong skill for the students involved. We seek to highlight this immensely overlooked component of a comprehensive musical education as a feature of our program.
Formal student recitals
There will be two formal student recitals each academic year, with the possibility of more on a need and readiness basis. Individuals registered for private lessons and committed to a complete music education are expected to perform. Ensembles generated from teacher collaboration or from group lessons also perform during these events. Half or full recitals by accomplished students are arranged according to readiness and permission from the instructor.
Weekend worship services
Worship gatherings at Bethel Church are always an opportunity for prepared and willing student performers with appropriate repertoire.
The Academy loves to display the excellence of diligent and faithful students and asks that the Academy community be continually aware of, and supportive by means of attendance to, these programs.
